Thanks in part to the 2010 Olympics, Vancouver boasts an exceptional number of first-class hotels, including glitzy skyscrapers in Coal Harbour, renovated downtown heritage properties and hip Yaletown boutique hotels. There are also a good number of more affordable chains, particularly on and around Granville Street near False Creek. Keep an eye out for the planned Trump International Hotel, slated to open in 2016 in a brand new Arthur Erickson twisting tower.
The Vancouver hotels below have been hand-picked by our guide author and are grouped into three pricing categories:
Luxury (over C$300)
Moderate (C$175 to C$300)
Cheap (up to C$175)
These prices are for one night in a double room in summer, including tax but not breakfast. Prices can be reduced by as much as half at other times of the year.
This swanky 77-room boutique affair is in a superb location on the fringes of the sophisticated Coal Harbour neighbourhood. Spacious rooms (most at least 37 sq m/400 sq ft) combine comfort and technology with down duvet and pillows, 42-inch TVs, music and video games, plus Molton Brown toiletries. Floor-to-ceiling windows open up spectacular views of the city, Stanley Park and the North Shore Mountains. The palatial two-bedroom Halo Penthouse Suite boasts a wrap-around outside terrace, four huge TVs and Nintendo Wii.
Rosewood Hotel Georgia
Reopened in 2011 after a painstaking four-year renovation, there’s no doubt the Rosewood Hotel Georgia has been restored to its former glory, when the likes of Elvis Presley and The Beatles graced its doorways. Today’s guests are treated to elegant rooms and suites, with delicious nods to the 1920s and 1930s and vast, decadently luxurious bathrooms. You can nip down to dinner at award-winning Hawksworth Restaurant, plunge into the saltwater pool, or sip cocktails in classy outdoor bar Reflections.
Fairmont Pacific Rim
Vancouver’s fourth Fairmont hotel opened in 2010 and is arguably the group’s most lavish property yet. The 377 rooms feature luxurious Stearns & Foster beds, 42-inch TVs, plush Mascioni linens and roomy marble bathrooms with separate shower and TV mirror. The Willow Stream Spa offers nine treatment rooms, outside patio and massive fitness centre, and the pièce de resistance might just be the open-air rooftop pool with hot tub, private cabanas and outdoor fire pits.
